Buddha Bar & Grill in Thao Dien is one of District 2’s most popular hang outs for expats, especially for sports enthusiasts. While it has a of a bit run down and seedy feel, the staff are friendly and service is usually good. With one of Buddha’s main draws being their bar games much of the bar is situated to accommodate the 2 pool tables, shuffle boards, and darts. And on most evenings the games get going early. Dart teams competing and people lining up for pool are common. But it’s quite spacious and offers areas to relax, grab a large table with friends, or you can cozy up to one of their bars or couches for more intimate conversations.
Live music kicks off at 9pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, mainly rock and blues with bands like The Smogtown Rats, Art of Noise, Nola Blues Club, and Plug n Play.
Prices might be considered a bit high for a Sports bar, but in District 2 that’s to be expected. The happy hour deal is good, bar snacks are above average, there’s a few craft beers for the hipsters, and with live music on Wednesdays and Fridays, Buddha Bar has all the bases covered for your go-to local bar. Oh, and they’re open till 4am which is very unusual for Ho Chi Minh City.
