In Saigong Rooftop Bar is on the corner of Huynh Thuc Khang and Ton That Dam, just at the beginning of the market(Huynh Thuc Khang Street Market). This area is basically the District 1 hostess bar neighborhood, but what makes In Saigong so different from all the other places in this area is its two open-air sides and the rooftop they slide open when it’s not raining, basically making this one of Saigon’s only non-poshy rooftop bars. And being on the 2nd floor it’s probably Saigon’s lowest rooftop bar.
The ambiance isn’t seedy or cramped like most of the other establishments in the area. And even though it’s only on the 2nd floor the views are surprisingly nice. Almost the entirety of the Bitexco building can be seen as well as the entire length of the market below.
The owner being from “The Gong” (the seaside city of Wollongong in Australia) has styled it appropriately, hence the name “In SaiGong”. While not technically a “girly bar” the staff will sit and have a drink with you, and while not technically a “sports bar” there is always a game on one of the 4 large screen TVs and sometimes on the large projector(usually premiere league, cricket or rugby). They also have live music on many nights. So it’s a bit of a mix, and usually a restful space to slow down, take in the view with a drink, and not feel pressured by an over-eager staff or jostled by big crowds.
It’s just a couple of minutes walk from Nguyen Hue Street and Bitexco Tower, but the bar’s entrance is a bit hard to find; on the side of the building and sort of through the first floor kitchen. The layout is quite nice and makes it easy for large groups to sit or stand by the bar area and smaller groups or couples to sit by the balcony overlooking the street and market.
The beer is reasonably priced – Tigers at VND30,000, Pasteur Street’s Jasmine IPA at VND90,000, and most happy hour cocktails are around VND100,000. The food is pretty basic pub fare, nothing exceptional but of decent quality.
Considering the live music, outdoor vibe, view, and very reasonable prices, In Saigong is a great place to stop in or to spend an evening. Get there in the later afternoon and watch the evening begin as Saigon city lights up.
There’s also a few dart boards.
