The Refinery Saigon is a cute bistro and wine bar known for its continental cuisine, an extensive wine list and its French charm. Located in Saigon’s old opium manufacture, The Refinery has turned a historic site into Saigon’s very own Parisian bistro. Both indoor and outdoor seating are well decorated with fresh flowers, adding a personal touch and a pleasing ambience. The dining room interior exudes an old world charm with low lighting, paintings from Old Vietnam and rustic furnishings. Add to this the hidden alley feeling and it can seem like an escape from city while right in the heart of it. Over the years The Refinery has established itself as a favorite spot for expats and the local French population in Ho Chi Minh City.
First time visitors often walk right by this secluded courtyard, just behind a dilapidated archway. But it’s just opposite the Park Hyatt Hotel – Saigon and next to El Gauchos Argentinian Steakhouse on Hai Ba Trung street.
With a predominately French menu paired with decently priced wine selections, including 17 Old and new world wines, a range of cocktails, this is a nice place to spend an evening or just hang out for an drink or light snack. While the food never seems to get rave reviews, it gets quite busy for lunch and dinner. And with the the outdoor setting is perfect for a glass of wine as the courtyard light changes from afternoon to evening.
Set lunches are served on weekdays and run until 3pm. Unusually late for HCMC, but great for travelers and office workers who take off-peak breaks. The two course set lunch runs around VND190,000 and includes a starter and a main, or a main and dessert, or for VND225,000 the 3 course set lunch. Their Saturday and Sunday brunch from 11 am to 4pm is also quite popular. As is the warm chocolate pudding and chocolate fondue fountain. Daily specials on food and drinks are listed on the blackboard out front and The Refinery Happy Hour is from from 4-7pm with 30% discount on all drinks. Parents visiting The Refinery with kids over the weekends should make early reservations for the kid’s corner where there is a dedicated babysitter.
The staff are professional but some reviewers have commented on the lack of attention, follow-up and overall warmth towards customers.
It is not the cheapest hideaway spot in Ho Chi Minh, nor the best in the city but an excellent one to spend time enjoying French styled cuisine and drinks. It is the perfect stop for both locals and tourists who are looking for a casual place to hang out while enjoying a French themed atmosphere.
