Thi Bar & Cafe is not really a cafe at all and is always simply referred to as Thi Bar. It’s on De Tham Street, just off Bui Vien and even after all this time it’s easy to pass right by it as the narrow exterior is just a jumble of motorbikes and one or two staff milling about. But it’s now been around long enough that it’s become a sort of institution in the Pham Ngu Lao area. Not as much for long-term residents, though they stop in from time to time, but for up-beat tourists, backpackers, and more and more it’s filling with young Vietnamese locals looking for happy live music in a vibrant atmosphere with prices they can handle. And being very gay friendly it never seems to have a rough, rude or seedy edge to it like many of the Pham Ngu Lao bars, it’s quite fun and energetic. On a quiet nights, which are rare, it could even be described as cozy.
And for being so small it’s a credit to it that it has become so popular. Once the music starts blasting at 9 or 10pm it’s almost always a packed house. If you’re not there early there’s no chance of getting one of the small tables with charis. So arrive by 8:15 or so if you want to grab a table with a group, or call to book a table (02822102929). But it’s also a good spot to come for more of a pre-party to hear some tunes and grab some drinks; talking can get tiring with the noise. Before the music kicks in it can be a great place to meet fellow travelers, though it’s usually pretty empty and very quiet until about 8:30.
The live music starts at 9pm on weekends and 10pm on weekdays. It’s mainly popish (Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Pink) sung by quality Filipino bands that keep things light and soulful. Every so often they’ll ask for requests so if you’re feeling a groove just let them know, they seem to have a large repertoire of pop music ready to be played. One singer who has been playing here for years, Kuleen, has a great set of pipes so finding nights when she’s on-stage is a good idea.
The drinks will be a bit more than other bars in this area, but cheaper than most live music bars in Saigon: 60,000VND for a Tiger, Saigon Green, 333, and Tiger Draft, and most cocktails are 110,000VND. The service, while not always there when you need them, is pretty easy to get the attention of, and they’re not the surly type you’ll often find in this area, they’re usually a friendly bunch.
Every Wednesday Thi Bar has happy all night long – buy 2 get 1 free on beers, cocktails and shots. The De Tham Street cocktail and Saigon Sleeper are some of the bar favorites. Wednesday is also one of the nights Miss Kuleen & D’Gang are on stage.
If you’re on a motorbike there really isn’t any parking outside which can be a pain. But the parking at 23/9 park isn’t too fat. Just drive up De Tham Street and take a right at Pham Ngu Lao and its just on your left.
