Utakata is small Japanese whisky bar, hidden away on the top floor of really cool colonial building on Tôn Thất Đạm Street, very close to the river (the Ben Nghe Channel) in District 1. It’s in the same building as the speakeasy style bar called Snuffbox and might be a nice escape if Snuffbox gets too crowded or noisy. Or if you just want a very unpretentious, down-to-earth cocktail bar in a unique corner of District 1 then this is a great place to try. It also has a nice view of the river and District 4. The view at night is actually quite lovely, and one of the only bars in District 1 to have such a view.
The music they play is a mix of Japanese pop with Western jazz, but they keep it at a low volume so it’s a nice place for a date, to have some good conversation, coming by yourself to take in the view and have a chat with the bartender, or even to read a book. It’s that chill.
The drinks are a bit pricey, but for quality cocktails and Asian rice and plum wines it’s not really out of the norm for Saigon cocktail bars. And the relaxing environment makes Utakata one of the hidden bars definitely worth finding in Saigon.
It’s a great place for
- bringing a group of friends
- going by yourself
- reading a book
